Gateway Park
Gateway Park is a joint venture of Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and the Worcester Business Development Corporation (WBDC) located in Worcester’s North Main Street area. The 11-acre, mixed-use development has become the “gateway” for the community’s emerging biotechnology and life sciences industry.
The unique partnership between WBDC and WPI has resulted in an investment of more than $80 million, including over $15 million in state and Federal funds. At full build-out, the Gateway Park project will create upwards of 2,000 high-wage jobs, and will add $6.6 million to the City of Worcester’s tax base.
2007 marked the grand opening of the Park with the 124,600 square feet WPI Life Sciences and Bioengineering Center and a 880-car parking facility. The $11 million garage received $2.5 million in EDA funding, and provides the necessary infrastructure to foster this significant economic development project for Worcester.
The WPI facility provides a unique opportunity for students and businesses to work together, fostering educational partnerships. One of the entities in this partnership is the Massachusetts Biomedical Initiative (MBI), a non-profit dedicated to promoting start-up biomedical companies. In addition to these ground-breaking partnerships, Gateway is home to RxI Pharmaceuticals, the new research company founded by Nobel Prize Laureate Dr. Craig Mello. Gateway is currently seeking tenants for three additional pad-ready sites supporting buildings of 80,000 square feet, 100,000 square feet, and 140,000 square feet.
